TEF Canada vs TCF Canada. Both work. Choose by fit.
IRCC accepts both tests for permanent residence and citizenship. This page compares them section by section, shows the official NCLC conversion for each, and separates the real format changes from the rumours.

Key takeaway
The short answer first
For Canadian immigration, the two tests are equals. IRCC lists both TEF Canada and TCF Canada as approved language tests for Express Entry, permanent residence and citizenship, and states no preference. Your results convert to the same NCLC levels on the same official tables. The deciding factors are practical: which test centre is reachable, which dates are available, and which format you can perform best in on the day.
Which one do you take?
Check both organisers' centre locators for your region, then write one full timed mock of each format. The one where your scores land higher is the one to book.
Section by section, side by side
TEF structure is confirmed from the official Le français des affaires pages. TCF structure is the format IRCC scores, as documented in The Franish's TCF Canada brief — France Éducation international's official pages were not accessible for independent verification, so those rows carry their source label.

Official NCLC conversion, both tests
IRCC's published conversion tables for tests taken after 10 December 2023. IRCC scores each skill independently — a strong reading score does not lift a weak speaking score.
TEF candidates: report the “Équivalence ancien score” column on your TEF certificate, not the “Score / 699” column.

Format-change status: fact vs rumour
TEF · one official change
Effective 1 September 2025, micro-trottoir listening questions offer 3 answer options instead of 4, and certain interview segments may be played twice. Reading and Listening have been 40 questions each since the December 2023 baseline. Everything else — timing, scoring, NCLC mapping, retake and validity — is stable.
Full TEF trend brief →TCF · “2026 reform” UNVERIFIED
The widely-shared “TCF has been reformed” claims — adaptive listening, a new writing rubric, spontaneity scored in speaking — come largely from a single prep source and are not confirmed by France Éducation international or IRCC. Treat them as trends to watch, not rules to fear. Nothing official requires you to prepare differently overnight.
See how we track both exams →Validity, cost, timing: the fine print
Validity for Express Entry
Results must be less than 2 years old when you complete your profile and again when you submit your PR application — for both tests. Both broadly carry a 2-year validity.
Citizenship: both accepted
IRCC accepts TEF Canada and TCF Canada as language proof for citizenship as well as permanent residence.
Fees and turnaround
IRCC does not publish test fees; costs are set by approved test agencies and vary by centre. Confirm fees, results delivery time and retake rules with the organiser in your region.
Where they are offered
Both organisers publish centre locators. Availability varies by country and city — for many candidates, the deciding factor is simply which test is bookable near them.
Retake rules
Both tests have retake wait rules; for the TEF Canada the documented wait is 20 days. Confirm the current rule for your test and centre before booking.
One sitting, four skills
For Canadian recognition you take all four modules of the same test — listening, reading, writing, speaking. Mixing tests or skills across organisers is not how it works.
TEF vs TCF questions, answered
Is TEF or TCF better for Canadian PR?+
Neither is 'better' — IRCC accepts both the TEF Canada and the TCF Canada for Express Entry and permanent residence language proof, and it does not state a preference between them. The practical deciding factors are test-centre availability in your region, scheduling, and which format suits you. Choose the one you can actually book, and prepare for it.
What is the difference between TEF Canada and TCF Canada?+
They are run by two different organizations — TEF Canada by Le français des affaires (CCI Paris Île-de-France), TCF Canada by France Éducation international. They score differently: TEF reports listening and reading out of 699 and maps all four skills to NCLC; TCF reports listening and reading in numeric bands and scores speaking and writing on a level scale. Both test the same four abilities and both convert to the same NCLC levels for IRCC.
Which is easier, TEF or TCF?+
There is no official comparison of difficulty, and candidates' experiences differ. TEF Canada has a longer speaking test (15 minutes, 2 tasks) while TCF Canada has a shorter one (about 12 minutes, 3 tasks); TCF writing has three shorter tasks while TEF writing has two longer ones. What matters for IRCC is the NCLC band you land in on each skill — try a full timed mock of each format before you decide.
Does IRCC prefer one of the two tests?+
No. IRCC's Express Entry language-test page lists both TEF Canada and TCF Canada as approved tests, and it expresses no preference. The same applies for citizenship language proof — both are accepted.
What TEF Canada score equals NCLC 7?+
For TEF tests taken after 10 December 2023, NCLC 7 is Reading 434–461, Listening 434–461, Speaking 456–493 and Writing 428–471, on the 'Équivalence ancien score' scale. Use that column on your TEF certificate — not the 'Score / 699' column — when reporting results to IRCC.
What TCF Canada score equals NCLC 7?+
NCLC 7 is TCF Reading 453–498, Listening 458–502, Speaking 10–11 and Writing 10–11. The full official conversion tables for both tests are on this page.
How long are TEF and TCF results valid for Express Entry?+
For Express Entry, IRCC requires test results to be less than 2 years old — both when you complete your profile and when you submit your permanent residence application. Both tests broadly carry a 2-year validity for immigration use; timing matters, so book with your application timeline in mind.
Has the TCF Canada format changed in 2026?+
No official overhaul has been confirmed by France Éducation international or IRCC. The widely-shared '2026 reform' talk — adaptive listening, a new writing rubric, spontaneity scoring in speaking — comes mostly from a single prep source and is treated as UNVERIFIED in The Franish's TCF Canada brief. The structure IRCC scores for Canadian PR remains four skills with the same score bands.
What changed in the TEF Canada in 2025?+
One official change, effective 1 September 2025: micro-trottoir (street-interview) listening questions now offer 3 answer options instead of 4, and certain interview segments may be played twice. Reading and Listening have been 40 questions each since the December 2023 baseline.
How is TEF Canada scored?+
Each of the four skills converts to an NCLC level via IRCC's official conversion table. TEF reading and listening scores run up to 699, and speaking and writing follow their own scale on the 'Équivalence ancien score' column — candidates should always report that column, not 'Score / 699'.
How is TCF Canada scored?+
TCF listening and reading are numeric bands (roughly 331–699 and 342–699 by level), while speaking and writing are scored on a level scale of 4 to 20. Each skill converts to the same NCLC levels IRCC uses for the TEF.
Can I use TEF or TCF for Canadian citizenship?+
Yes — IRCC accepts both TEF Canada and TCF Canada as language proof for citizenship as well as for permanent residence. The same results can also support a French-language Express Entry category profile if you reach NCLC 7 in all four abilities.
